This is kind of stems from a Rodriguez stab, but a more broader one,
I, personally hate all this one man film maker crap. reason being as far as im concerned i want to make it as a director, when I'm on set all I want to do is direct, I don't want to worry about costume, continuity, props, lighting, camera etc, I want to concentrate on the frame and what is happening in that frame hence why I have a larger than most low budget films crew on my films.
Also more importantly I want the best that I can get and give to my film, which I'm sure everyone does, but how can you give and get the best when you try and do everything yourself ?
Or is that just my opinion ?

That's just your opinion, chance.
Everyone has their own opinions.
What are expecting to get out of this thread?
Nothing but people's opinions.
You don't seem to want to change your mind about this whole 'one man filmmaker' thing, and neither does anyone else.
So what's the point in even posting something like this?
We've all heard you go on and on about Rodriguez, about gaffer tape, etc.
If you hate him so much why dont you just stop referring to him?

I think it depends very much on the scale of the 'project' being worked on.
If you're using tons of extras and actors then you really need Assistant Directors for instance.
Mariachi doesn't have too many people in it, so no need.
A hell of a lot of it is shot outside, so there is no need for lighting - hence, no DP.
He shot silent, so no sound recordist/boom operator needed.
He based the script on locations and props he already had, so no need for location manager/prop master.
The actors (apart from the girl) wear the same clothes throughout, so not too many continuity problems there (plus it was shot very quickly, so no one was suddenly going to get a hippie haircut half-way through the shoot).
His choice to operate the camera is a personal one, he'd rather just get the shots himself rather than explain exactly what he wants from the camera op.
The facts are all there for this example.
For others...well like I said, depends on the size and scale of the project really.
And by the way...is it me or is the board incredibly slow to load at the moment???

I agree with you chance, I would much rather be a part of a well led team of people, than do all the work myself. Trouble is thats whats happened!

>ROTF, it would be a pretty broing place if people didnt share opinions and just agreed with everything, what do i expect out of this thread ? a debate im interesting in hearing other peoples opinions !

>Nextspielberg, well whats the point in having conversation then ?

>this isnt so much to do with rodriguez this topic, it just stemmed from there, i believe as well as having your idols it is also important to have you nemesis if thats the right word
>after all isnt this why people come to this board to share and read other peoples thoughts and information ?

Don't get me and chance started on this Rodriguez thing!
nextspielberg, I think you have had a moment of clarity, but all anyone will ever give is their opinion. Opinions are what make up the world, if someone in the industry visited this board and posted it would still only be their opinion. If you don't want opinion you're in the wrong place.
I agree with chance (for a change). One-man film crews don't produce top quality product. If the option's there I'd always go with a crew. I think Rodriguez did it out of necessity rather than to increase quality.
I'm not saying one-man film crews are impossible but only under certain conditions. A crew bring a lot to the production, if nothing else they take the strain off the director, who can focus on artistic decisions rather than where they can get another extension lead.

Whatever works for you! ....that's all guys and girls.
What Rodriguez did worked for him, and look at what he has achieved. Other film makers have done it differently, and it's worked for them too.
In a nutshell if you can achieve a goal that you want, it really doesn't matter how you do it (providing it's legal/moral).
Chance - Nice one, you seem to have a lot in the pipeline and no doubt it will be excellent, with the amount of hardwork I've read that you have put into it. How you are doing it is the way you do it, but the key is, you are doing it, not how. I agree with the idolising bit, but your nemesis should the people who hinder you (which can unfortunately be blamed on having a large team), or tell you can't do it.
Anyway, nice one all, keep up the good work!

I don't think Rodriguez believes that having one man is best, he is simply showing that it can be done - which is the whole point of his book. I don't think he regards his El Mariachi shoot as ideal.
